Obituary: Greg Wilson
Posted Date: January 30 2025
Longtime AFM 433 member Greg Wilson passed away on January 21st, 2025. Greg did a wide range of work in the music business and was a beloved mainstay of the Austin music community. An excellent reader and woodwind doubler, he was a top call for touring shows that came to Austin and for local theater productions. His deep background in classical, jazz, rock, and commercial music made him a regular in a wide range of bands including Tony Campise’s big band, Monster Big Band, Creative Opportunity Orchestra, Mingo Fishtrap, The Copa Kings, Blue Millenium, and 47 Indians. He played with the Nova Saxophone Quartet for 21 years, recording three albums with them. Greg was a true mentor to his students – in addition to teaching saxophone at Texas State University for several years, he maintained a full teaching schedule of high-schoolers, middle-schoolers, and adults. He was also the main force behind the design of MacSax saxophones and mouthpieces. He will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues.
Ed. A “Celebration of Life” in honor of Wilson’s remarkable legacy will be held at Parker Jazz Club on February 1st, 2-5pm.
